I (Stephanie) have put off writing this post for such a long time. It’s been over a month since we were in Yosemite, and as soon as we came back we were bombarded with every day life. So many weddings and sessions to pump out, a laptop that died, a phone that drowned, cousins coming in from Cuba to visit…we’ve even slacked on Photog Fridays! No worries to all of you on our mailing list. We have a gem for you this Friday. 😉
A little backstory to this visit. When I was in high school, my mom hosted foreign exchange students from different countries. One of her students was Christin, and she was undoubtedly the one I grew closest to! We only spent the summer and holidays together as I was going off to my first semester at BG, but we sat on my bed and cried the night before I left…like we’d known each other for years! Since then, we’ve only seen each other once…WAY back in 2007 when I took a trip to Germany. This is the first time we’ve seen each other since then, and she’s just as beautiful, fun, amazing, and hilarious as ever! She’s married and she’s gonna be a momma!
I decided to take Spencer along with me. I know…I know…on a trip SO heavily laden with hiking, is bringing along a five-year-old REALLY the best idea? Well, we did some research in the part of California we were going to be in, and they had GIANT SEQUOIAS. AKA: redwood trees. Now listen you guys, my son is not the average 5-year-old. Lol. He knows what tardigrades are and what their tiny ecosystem is like (if you don’t know what they are google them right now. Adorable.). He can name all the zones of the ocean. He thinks engineering is fun and interesting. He can literally look at something and figure out how to rearrange it to make something completely new without leaving any parts unused. He knows 5 different squid species, 8 different whale species, can name a different dinosaur for every letter of the alphabet, and can do multiplication in his head. I know, I know…every mom thinks their kid is special and is way smarter than all the other kids. I’m not saying he’s smarter than all the other kids, but my goodness is he SPECIAL. The reason I decided to take him with me aside from the obvious enrichment? He has wanted to see redwood trees up close “his whole life.” <3
We had such an amazing adventure while we were out west! So many hiking trails, we got to see El Capitan, we went up close and personal to a waterfall, Spencer got his Junior Ranger badge, we got to see Christin and her husband Marcus, and of course…the redwoods. But one of my favorite parts of the trip? Well, that had to have been when Spencer asked to take my camera so HE could take pictures! Wait till you see them you guys. I know I’m hard core bragging, but I’m not even ashamed.
Check out the highlights from our awesome trip!
Spencer was amazed at how high the snow was, but how warm it still was! He said, “Look! This snow is as big as me!”
My German sister, Christin! Oh, it had been way too long! She is such a special lady and is going to make such a great mom!
Here is Spencer, doing all of his activities to earn his junior ranger badge! He had to pick up litter around Yosemite, draw a creature he saw, record what he noticed in his senses, asked some park rangers some questions…it was quite the extensive task! I was so proud of him!
Getting sworn in. <3
It was our last full day in California, and the last item on our agenda was to go to the Sequoia National Park! We had to drive quite a ways up in the mountains to finally start seeing redwoods, but once we did, this little man was so excited! He started shouting, “Look! My redwoods, my redwoods!” We got out of the car as soon as we could to go see these beauties up close!
Here we go, you guys…everything on the blog from here on out are pictures that my boy took! I was SO proud of him! <3 This first one, he went up to the fisherman and asked if he could take a picture of him. The fisherman laughed and said “Sure,” and looked right at the camera. Spencer said, “No, no. I want to take a picture of you actually fishing. Can you face that direction and pick up your pole?” My heart you guys. I just couldn’t take it. <3 <3 <3
